THE YOUNG VICTORIA -REVIEW

SEARCH: blunt,victoria,royal,strong,Bettany,friend,regal
The Young Victoria

Director: Jean-Marc Vallae
Cast: Emily Blunt, Mark Strong,Paul Bettany, Rupert Friend,
Rating: 4/5

A period drama is not always a successful venture. Especially one that is about British Royals as this does not generate much revenue in the US. That leaves the rest of the world, much of which is still under British rule. That is by no means a compulsion to see it. It is however a brilliant movie that should not be ignored.

Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Sunshine Cleaning) shines in the titular role. Her poise and delivery so skilfully suit the regal role and her transition from girl to woman is evident as she gradually takes the reins of responsibility from those around her and rules in her own terms.

Paul Bettany (Master & Commander, A Beautiful Mind) puts in a strong performance as Lord Melbourne who becomes aid and advisor to the Queen. The charm and determination of Lord Melbourne seemed an effortless exercise for Bettany as he has a myriad of experience in such roles coming from BBC Drama beginnings.

Mark Strong (Rock N Rolla)is fast becoming a Cinema Rat favourite and his performance here is ferocious and unflinching. Strong continuing as a hard man of cinema is in no doubts here as his delivery and characterisation is flawless as Sir John Conroy.

Rupert Friend as Prince Albert is a soft touch. This reviewer is not sure if this was meant to convey innocence or lack of backbone but it felt as if his character was limping through the film being guided by the others. Friend nonetheless brought a certain whimsy to Prince Albert, that in the brief moment where he shone, he was a delight to watch.

The costumes and set pieces are always a focal point in these things and Victoria had it all down to the finest detail. The dresses were divine and the ornate furniture as well as our glimpse inside Buckingham Palace at its opening was indeed a visual treat.

There is not much to note about the musical score here, as from memory it did not have much on an impact on the overall viewing experience.

The love story between Albert and Victoria was ever-present and one wonders if that was the driving force in distancing the historial perception of Queen Victoria into something more palatable.

The Young Victoria is a step up for Blunt and a notable piece period drama. History may not repeat itself exactly, however in this retelling this reviewer was amused.

FIGHTING - REVIEW

SEARCH: channing,tatum,blood,street,fighting,terrance,howard
Fighting

Director:Dito Montiel
Cast:Channing Tatum, Terrence Howard, Brian White, Luis Guzman, Zulay Henao
Rating: 4/5

Fighting is the latest feature from director Dito Montiel who also worked with Tatum on A Guide To Recognising Your Saints. It centres on Sean McArthur (Tatum) a street level hustler who meets Harvey (Howard) and gets introduced to the world of bare knuckle boxing with big pay cheques.

Another familiar face here is Luis Guzman. He plays the manager to Evan, the flavour of the month fighter that Sean knows from school. Guzman is consistently good in the roles he plays and having appeared in the Taking of Pelham 123 remake recently with a slew of A-List actors, deserves much greater recognition for his sometimes type-cast efforts.

The premise is weak, there's no hiding that. Pretty-boys beat each other up for money. It's that simple. Though there is a love story here and an attempt at back story, that could have been further developed.

The reason this reviewer rates Fighting so highly is because it delivers on its promise of great fights that don't disappoint. There is a certain raw element to this story that aims at doco-dama style cinema, however the sound track of banging club beats takes a shine off its art house edginess

This reviewer did not like Saints much however Fighting was engaging. It showed maturity and growth from Montiel that was really pleasing.

A negative here was the editing. Although this is a physically driven film and capturing the essence of each battle was essential, some scenes were a little too choppy and felt sloppily done.

That was not enough to detract from a maturing Tatum, a challenging Howard and a street-fighting good time. This will appeal to the ladies also as there are many melting moments to sustain their interest, and you just might enjoy the story too...and roll with the punches.

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS - REVIEW

INGLORIOUS BASTERDS

Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Brad Pitt, Eli Roth, BJ Novak, Mike Myers, Diane Kruger
Rating: 4/5

Inglorious Basterds is the latest feature from the King of Cult Quinten Tarantio. It depicts his interpretation of the killing of the Jews in Nazi occupied France during WWII. The story is not entirely fictitious though by Tarantino's own admission there is a time in the feature when history goes one way and Tarantino so stubbornly goes his own. A departure from the truth is not such a bad thing, and the characters on screen are so richly textured and well played out that you get sucked in for the kill...literally.

Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz chart the course of this journey. Pitt is playfully brutal as Lt. Aldo Raine and Waltz is a stunningly frightening Col. Hans Landa. Tarantino didn't make an appearance in this particular work, though he has done in most of his pieces, though if you listen very carefully you will hear two familiar voices from Tarantino's brilliant body of work. The surprise inclusion here was Mike Meyers. Known most recently for his comedic Austin Powers, the choice to put him in dramatic shoes was an odd one. This reviewer expected a comedic tirade from Meyers that dropped a few gags. Fortunately this was not the case and although you sensed he and fellow cast members wanted to break into laughter as he spoke, the performance was adequate and served the stories purpose.

The violence is confronting and almost makes you look the other way at times. This is nothing new in a Tarantino piece. The soundtrack also played an integral part in the telling of the story, acting as its own character at times to breathe life or a voice into the action on screen.

Christoph Waltz

The main concerns this reviewer felt, were its length and the choice to weigh the dialouge down in subtitles rather than English. Admittedly Basterds is not placed in a predominantly English speaking country so why would they use it? The audience - at least from my perspective, is not fluent in German or French in much of its Global exposure thus having to reply on reading along with the story in order to keep abreast of the situation. This always divides the audience on its reaction to events. On the one hand you are so engrossed in the text that you miss the visuals and on the other - you are intrigued enough by the action, that you forgo the story and guess what's being said.

This reviewer managed to keep a healthy grasp on dialogue and the gory stuff, enough to understand the thing though left feeling mentally exhausted by the end.

This brings me to my other qualm. The whole thing was about 20-30mins too long. Coming in about that much over 2 hours, it felt like the dialogue lumbered along a bit and there weren't enough action sequences to keep an audience switched on. The film is in 5 chapters. While each was integral to the story, some could have been trimmed a little to keep things humming along. While there are some juicey bits such as Landa's comparison of a Jew to a Rat, and a bar sequence, the gritty killings were too few for this reviewers liking and the talk was too thick.

Martin Wutke as Adolf Hitler
Martin Wutke as Adolf Hitler

The closing sequence in the theatre was visually stunning and a special mention must go to Martin Wutke who's Hitler impression was a definite treat, Basterds leaves you wondering how things would be today if it played out such as Tarantino imagined. It always makes this reviewer curious as to Tarantino's future works. This is the first foray into actual events we have seen for him, and one wonder's if he has taken a liking to it.

Tarantino has outdone himself again, and he can add another cinematic scalp to his cult classic collection
