Confessions of a Shop-a-holic is the first major film for Aussie beauty Isla Fisher. American audiences first warmed to her opposite Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers and she teamed with American Pie funny-man Jason Biggs in Wedding Daze. In a leap away from the nuptial genre Fischer demonstrates a consistent light side of humour.
This movie ticks all the boxes in terms of Chick Flick fodder, escapism, a love interest, fashion, a bad guy, laughs and a character arc that while predictable is fulfilling. Director PJ Hogan of MurieÂs Wedding fame shows he is adept behind the camera and his ability to showcase the clothing and accessories whilst counter-balancing them with the pitfalls of such an addiction ate to be commended. Our resident baddie the debt collector played by Robert Stanton is a treat and his dorky drollness is wonderful to watch.
A slew off well known actors including John Lithgow, John Goodman and Joan Cusack play key roles in this feature however it is all about Fischer and her sense of fashion.
Hugh Dancy who plays love interest Luke Brandon is eye candy for those not fixated on the clothes his soft-spoken ness and feminine mannerisms but him just between camp and questionable though you ultimately know he will end up with the leading lady ( and a credit card debt to boot).
This is a chick flick through and through and if you really care you will pick up some subtle hints about reducing your credit card debt along the way(the card in the ice block has been used a lot).
It was fun, and hopefully the association with PJ Hogan can pay dividens for Fisher as it di for Toni Collette in the aforementioned Muriels Wedding. Hopefully another Aussie starlet can have the same levels of success.
I am sure that her impending real life nuptials will play a part too as Sascha Baren-Cohen for all his vulgarity is still a hot ticket in Tinseltown.
Rent this on DVD as this isin stores now, just try not to use your credit card to get it!
