GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST - REVIEW (ON DVD)

Ghosts of girlfriends past

Director:Mark Waters
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Lacey Chabert, Michael Douglas, Emma Stone
Rating: ****

Matthew McConaughey rarely acts outside the square, by that this reviewer means, he always plays himself. The problem with that is, it works (save for Fools Gold). This mean's his penchant for being topless (on screen and off) , his chiseled good locks and his smarmy demeanour will continue to prop up his ego, and his bank account at the Box Office.

The above reasons make this role perfect for him - and it shows. He fills the shoes of Conner mead with ease, and is joined on screen by Jennifer Garner and another famous playboy - Michael Douglas. It is nice to see McConaughey play off against Garner for a change, and the shift in chemistry from Kate Hudson is evident. This casting change pays dividends as there is something sweet about Garner that works on screen, that is somehow missing with Hudson.

Girlfriends appeals to all manner of women and pitches at a broad range of racial demographics early on. It also appeals to the guys, as it throws those who are looking to score, a bone or two about how to woo the ladies.

Douglas, has fun with his role as Mead's deceased Uncle. You can tell by the gleam in his eye he's playing this role for laughs the whole way, almost as if he doesn't care what you think.

Mead's character arc is not challenging. Through 3 ghosts, in the spirit (pun intended) of A Christmas Carol, he learns to change his ways or risk losing the one thing he loves forever.

Girlfriends is about chasing the one you want, that is always out of reach, and trying everything on the menu along the way.

Girlfriends is your standard Rom-Com but it's written by The Hangover scribes. It's just that little bit better than your standard fare. A nice date movie (surprisingly ) for a Friday night inside, out of the rain, which is exactly how this reviewer saw it.
