Ice Age 3 - Melting Moments
Sid, Manny, Diego, Scrat and Ellie, have come a long way since we first met them in the original Ice Age movie. This third outing sees much advancement in their lives, both within the plot and as a viewer. The graphics this time around are richer and slightly more superb than previous efforts. Our two Mammoths, Manny and Ellie, are preparing for the birth of their child , and Diego is considering moving on from the motley bunch. Our over-excited young Scrat has also met his match, and seemingly a mate.
As things go, it was familiar ground with or prehistoric friends, thus it was a welcome change to have a new character in this mix. Simon Pegg, (Star Trek, Hot Fuzz) appeared in a colourful role as “Buck” the nomad adventurer who navigated our friends through the dinosaur world and opened their eyes to a world they hadn’t even realised existed.
The richness of colour and wonderment at the dinosaur landscape are key figures in this movie. The jokes are still there though some come cheap and you get the feeling the actor’s hearts aren’t in it 100% of the time.
I was pleased to see the character of Sid be given a meatier role this time around, they fleshed out his character rather well and showed us more than just slapstick screwball antics that his persona has become known for.
This movie is certainly for the kids, not a kids movie for adults, as some of the more eloquent animations (Madagascar, Finding Nemo) allow. If you’re after 90 or so minutes of laughs and escapism then this is the family movie for you.
3 / 5 Peaches.
