New Weekend Releases for April 2
Three movies open in wide release for April 2nd.
Clash of the Titans
This is the movie I'll be seeing this weekend, despite all the less-than-stellar reviews I've read. I like the genre. I like the spectacle, I like Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and Sam Worthington. With all that going on for it, I couldn't hate this movie that much! Hopefully, I won't be eating my words as I leave the theater!
Critics have trashed the writing, the sets, the accents, the directing--pretty much everything. In an article titled Clunk of the Titans, Megan McArdle, reviewing the movie for The Atlantic, said that Sam Worthington's acting "makes Keanu Reeves look positively Shakespearean". Now, that has to be one tough job!
The Last Song
Even if I had Bill Gates' fortune, I would not pay good money to see Miley Cyrus in a movie. If I really wanted to see her bad acting, I could watch "Hannah Montana" any time I cared to turn on my TV. I haven't yet figured out exactly what it is about Cyrus, but out of all the so-called "stars" that the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and the other child-performer factories have turned out, she annoys the most!
I loved "The Notebook", and I even somewhat enjoyed "Message In a Bottle", but when I read that Nicholas Sparks had written this with Miley Cyrus in mind, I really thought the guy must be watching too much television!
Why Did I Get Married Too?
I find Tyler Perry very likeable, but I've never been a huge fan of romantic comedies or even comedies in general. I'm not sure what it is, but they just don't tend to hold my attention for two hours, or even 90 minutes, in the theater. So, despite the presence of Perry, Richard T. Jones, Jill Scott, Janet Jackson, and the great Cicely Tyson, I'll probably see this on DVD.
Three movies that I do plan to view on DVD open in limited release this week.
Warlords, starring Jet Li and directed by Peter Chan, is set in China's Taiping Rebellion in the 1860's. I love this type of historical drama!
Don McKay stars Thomas Haden Church as a high school janitor who returns to his hometown 25 years after leaving it, to rekindle a romance with an old girlfriend who is dying, played by Elisabeth Shue. Also included in the cast are Melissa Leo, M. Emmett Walsh and Keith David.
Written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson, Leaves of Grass stars Edward Norton in dual roles as identical twin brothers--one an Ivy League philosophy professor, the other a small-time marijuana grower, in small-town Oklahoma. Susan Sarandon is also in the cast.
