Cast: Beyonce Knowles, Idris Elba,Ali Larter, Jerry O'Connell
Rating: ***1/2
Given that Beyonce was in the country I thought it apt to review this movie. Obsessed is about a wife Sharon (Knowles) who becomes enraged when a woman (Larter) makes advances on her high flying Executive Director husband Derek (Elba) and she finds out about it.
This is Knowles first foray into a strictly serious role, without relying on her vocal chords to carry her performance as she did with Dreamgirls. Much hoopla is made when musicians make the leap to the Silver screen, when they are built up as an icon or at least proficient in one genre. Then they are tasked with proving themselves in another arena and the result is not always appealing.
Knowles has had a shaky start to her film career, and her impressive turn in Dreamgirls left her open to other influences. Obsessed is one such influence and a positive one at that. Her poise and steely demeanour are spot on and this reviewer was somewhat surprised with the colour and shade she showed in this performance.
Her supporting cast were also competent especially Elba as the husband who is endeavouring to stave off advances from the "other woman" and cope with his wife's belief of what has occurred to cause a rift in their perceived "perfect lives".
For the most part the cinematography is formulaic however as the climactic scenes build, so does the daring with the camera and some risk is taken that pays dividends and perfectly enhances the on screen drama.
A meaty performance all round and a real life example of how things can go horribly wrong without the slightest bit of input from anyone directly involved. Obsessed is worth a watch, and so is Knowles, in the acting arena, she may be Sasha Fierce to her adoring musical fans, but her acting chops also have some bite to them.
