Public Enemies
Public Enemies

Director: Michael Mann
Cast: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Jason Clarke, Rory Cochran
Rating: 3/5
Michael Mann's Heat will forever in my mind be his signature film. The

A-list casting met with a great modern Western tale and resulted in
acclaim and box office glory. Since then however, Mann has tried to re
invent the wheel (pun intended). Some have created fire (Collateral)
and some have misfired (Miami Vice). Sadly this semi-biopic falls into
the latter.

Depp and Bale are two of the hottest properties in Hollywood given
bale's Batman reinvention and Depps pirate Captain Jack Sparrow and
forth-coming Mad Hatter. So it is no surprise Mann had them in his
sights.

Once again the casting fell short but this time it was just the one
character, sadly thought it was the main actor -Depp. See the problem
with depp is he does crazy really well, Edward Scissor-Hands, Willy
Wonka, Sweeny Todd and even Jack Sparrow are all examples of this,

which make it hard for you to understand his movie to a dramatic role such
as this.

A minor role from Aussie actor David Whennam and a cameo shorter than
his name by channing Tatum I feel could have been better done with
more finesse but they each served their purpose to progress the story
anyhow.

The costumes props cars and set pieces were very well handled and the
major gun battles were beautifully orchestrated. The music also bugged
Me. I know it's 1933 depression era stuff but with Dillenger's broad
(Cotillard) name being Biillie it was a bit too coincidental to have
Billie holiday frequent the sound track and it bordered in the side of tacky

It is a long movie. I only looked at my watch once though that does
highlight the fact I did lose focus part the way through

public,enemies

Mann's use of close up handheld camera work was a good idea though it
didn't seem to win me over and allow me to feel part of the film
though I understand what he was trying to achieve making the the audience part of the story.

Without giving too much away, it's key motivator for the capture of
Dillenger had been done before and regardless of the true nature of
the story as this happened early on, it didn't hold my interest.
