Rating: 3/5
The Lucky Ones is essentially a road movie. Its also a buddy film and a black comedy. It is also pleasantly surprising.
Tim Robbins,(The Shawshank Redemption) Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Michael Pena (World Trade Center) are three army service people headed home from New York City to see their families. There is a blackout at the airport causing all planes to be grounded so these three drive a car 14 hours overnight to Cheaver's (Robbins) house for him to reunite with his wife then the other two are headed for Vegas. TK Poole (Pena) to see his girfriend and Colee (McAdams) to deliver a guitar to her dead army boyfriends family.
Cheaver has just gotten out, TK's entire family is in the Army and Colee just misses her music man . These three spend the btter part of a day and a half getting to know each other all too well and while they learn unforgettable things about eachother they also learn lessons about themselves.
Robbins is familiar in his mannerisms as he will always be remembered for Shawshank. He plays a convincing husband and father here and shows great conviction in each line. Rachel McAdams is sweet and has all the challenges of physical ailment as her character was wounded in the leg in combat. She is effortless even with this disability and manages to pull of a sweet Southern drawl.
Michael Pena is indeed a find. The antsy Army brat who is persistent about protecting his manhood provides the necessary counter-weight to Colee. He is the macho one, who has drive and ambition and aspires to raise in the ranks of the Army to make his family proud and serve his country. It is his third tour and he shows no signs of wanting out.
The three lost souls meet for a reason it seems. To change each others lives. The close proximity of the car, and the deep trust they share when telling their stories is all possible through their underlying Army family bond.
There isn't great cinematography, CGI or snappy editing here. It's a solid story about growth and change and a sense of pride and respect for service men and women on show here.
At its core The Lucky Ones is a movie about self discovery and although the finding may not make for a happy ending for all three of our American Heros, you enjoy playing back-seat driver all the same.
