Was i hallucinating? Did i just see a real political statement from a road movie without falling down the red velvety stairs of drama?
Three soldiers, one road with many exits and a country divided in a "thank you" and a "screw you" attitude.
This film is war and war is hell, as the saying goes. Hell though, in this offbeat cinema of Neil Burger is a chance to rise and make a joke about it.
Robbins is beyond judgement here, Pena seems like he will be around our screens for a while but... and..also...phew... (my god!) Mcadams gives an oscar worthy performance "again" ,her body language, accent, pauses, makes her character dance the angel's dance in the lake of fire.
Am i exaggerating? Maybe, but i am an enthusiastic kind of guy and Rachel is calling for more roles, trickier and more memorable ones.
The characters shine as awkard in living life's small moments, uncomfortable with their dreams but Burger never does, for a strange and magnificent reason. He uses all the drama tension to create more comedic moments that dig deeper in sense and meaning.
I am fortunate and lucky to watch this after all the copy-paste Iraq movies that were produced the recent years. And you should be too. This is not about big guns, blood and the US outdoor policy ,it's about the indoor personal frustration and chaos that we feel when we are facing the road ahead.
So, if you carry a quitar ,don't sell it just yet, learn how to play it.
Note to self: You failed to comply.
