The Ugly Truth

Director: Robert Luketic
Cast: Katherine Heigl,Gerard Butler
Rating: 3/5

Robert Luketics latest effort following his reasonably well received 21 is rom-com The Ugly Truth. This film pairs Knocked Up and Greys Anatomy starlet Kathryn Heigl with 300 and PS I Love You hunk Gerard Butler. On paper this pairing reads commercial success, however like book to film the words dont always make good pictures and The Ugly Truth is one such example.

I did enjoy the story of a TV Producer Abby (Heigl) and her talent Mike (Gerard Butler) being brought in to revive flagging ratings. Butlers character was a B-Grade late night call-in show host who dealt advice about life love and anything else he can sink his teeth into and spit out the harsh reality of his wisdom upon the unsuspecting caller.

The tale however was predictable. I didntspend one moment wishing for the two to fall in love, or waiting for the punch line or feeling sorry for Butlers character as his chauvinistic techniques worked a treat on Heigels characters unsuspecting male suitors as she endeavoured to win them over being the librarian and the stripper to appease the male psyche.

This was not a gritty tale of psychological endeavours by any means, purely a boy-meets-girl Rom-com with a desirable outcome. Butler having done an even number of action flicks (300 and Rock n Rolla) and Rom-coms(PS I love you and Ugly Truth) leaves him open to swing the pendulum in any direction he chooses, however I think I prefer his tough guy persona to his comedic side.

The gags were indeed funny as sometimes the truth can sting but is also the best comedic fodder and I thought Butler had impeccabletiming even though his accent was a little off. Heigel was Exec Producer on this film and I would bet her creative input was used here as it seemed very much a vehicle for her rather than a partnership between the two. Luketic has obviously taken a liking to her with two of his up coming films having her in the cast. Perhaps this will be the next Woody Allen/Scarlett Johansson pairing? Hopefully this new pair can have the same level of success.

Luketic has hit the mark commercially again as this is more in his Legally Blonde genre. He may have pigeon-holed himself and that is ok if it sells, but it may not earn him the respect of his peers, and although financially he would sit pretty, I coud not class him as agreat Australian director. That is the truth, albeit ugly.

Honestly, Duncan. This is the first time, I saw Gerard Butler showing off his humor side in the big screen!

If you want me to rate this film, I would probably say, 6.5 out of 10.

I am a total gonner for sappy movies, but this one just looks like the same old thing. I get tired of the same old formula.

Yes Wilson it is the first time he really busts our with humor and it was enjoyable. If you divide your rating by 2 you only really rated it half a star better than me. Please check out my other reviews and subscribe to this blog for regular updates.

Hi Kristin,

Yes it's a date movie pure and simple. It didn't make me want to cry or jump out of my seat and root for the underdog though. Thanks for stopping by hope to hear from you again.

This film deserve a much lower review. If you want to see a real romantic comedy watch 500 Days of Summer not this bogus.

I'll probably still see it anyway, but I won't be expecting too much now. Sometimes good actors can override a pathetic story, but not always.

As for "Perhaps this will be the next Woody Allen/Sienna Miller pairing?"... have those two even worked together? Which films have they collaborated on?
