Star Trek -" Beyond The Unknown"
Let it be said that I am not a "Trekkie". I have barely seen the series and none of the previous movies. Having only basic knowledge of the characters I went into this movie with no misconceptions. Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, Anton Yelchin,, Simon Pegg(Hot Fuzz), and Mr. Leonard Nimoy should all be very proud of themselves.
A notable performance from Eric Bana (Black Hawk Down, Troy) as Nero is also worth mentioning, in a physical transformation that even his own agent said he didn't recognise.
JJ Abrams, the brains behind hit TV shows such as Lost and Alias has the ability to engage and entertain the viewer and on this occasion its no different, where the viewer gets lost in deep space along with the crew of the Starship Enterprise.
This "beginning" story is the perfect springboard for new Trek fans and also serves to bridge the gaps for the aforementioned Trekkies on how KirK got to where he was and why Spock is so conflicted.
The dialogue is quick, and the action compliments it effortlessly. Effects pay a big part in any sci-fi adventure but the ones present here are a reminder of what big budgets and even bigger ideas can do when they marry well on screen.
My only criticism is that one or two scenes that were set up for character development may not have been necessary and one in particular seemed to purely serve as product placement.
A fast-paced trip back to the future, for Vulcans, Humans, Romuluns and the rest of us..
4 /5
