Carl Fredricksen is not your matinee idol. He doesn't have a chiselled
jaw, rippling abs or a determine stare that makes you melt, but his
sense of adventure places you in the palm of his hand and the thrill
ride that ensues is a love story worthy of any romantic lead on the
silverscreen today.
Carl's "Sundance" is junior Wilderness Explorer Russell. He is on his
own quest, for another badge, the one that will promote him to ranks
of... Senior Wilderness Explorer. The reason Russell lands on carls
front porch is that the badge he requires is obtained through
assisting the elderly and carl is his chosen one.
Through a series of events, they end up together on a journey to
"paradise falls" the illusive destination carl has dreampt his entire
life of seeing. Carl has reasons for visiting the falls , one of which
is to retrace the trek travelled by an explorer he idolised as a small
boy.
The child within is Carl, reborn will the help of rusells presence however
he still harbours emotions of his past, that he is looking to resolve.
Up is brilliantly realised in 3D. The story is rich with visual
treats, and has some sly asides for the oldies. Theete are rumours
that Up will enjoy an oscar nomination for best picture this year and
this reviewer thongs such a thing would be well deserved. The dramatic
subplot and adopt concepts are a bold move for the genre, if lightly
explored.
The voice cast is impressive, and Asner's Carl is so real you almost forget your're watching animation - which is precisely the point that supporters of 3D technology are trying to make.
It is hard to find fault with this piece, and as mentioned above at rimes this reviewer had ti remind himself it was an animation as it was so easy to get lost in the story. The trivalities of logistics were swept up on the breeze here and it was a thrill ride from start to finish.
Nods to Disney's own Lion King and prehistoric favourite Jurassic Park
are evident though the most heartwarming moments are akin to scenes
right out of The Notebook.
Perhaps you may already be sold on this feature based on those
references alone, however this reviewer encourages you to see it for
yourself and go on your own personal journey with our unwilling hero. Up has set the bar for cinema, not just for the animation genre. It ticks all the right boxes - family entertainment, drama, comedy, colour, spectacle, mystery and a love story. A definite must see this year.
If you needed any further convincing, this reviewer was surprisingly moved by this tale, and you will be too...Cross my heart
